The idea that everything has to be perfect is a myth and it is stopping you from getting things done.
We make excuses so that we can put off starting the things we really want to do.
I don't have enough money.
I don't have enough time.
I don't know where to start.
I really, really want it but I have to wait for the right time, for the stars to align so that I will feel 100% ready.
I'm here to tell you that there is no perfect time. What is important is just starting - the key is taking action, and actions get results!
Every day we are faced with stories and images of people living their best lives and that's great and we should totally aspire to live our best lives. But what you don't see is the struggle that it took for them to get to where they are.
The picture below was the summit day of the Annapurna Circuit Trek which I did last year. It was hard, I struggled and at points didn't think I would make it, needing to ask for help along the way. If I had waited to feel 100% ready I would not have started but I took it one step at a time and reached the top.
This is what I encourage in my coaching, for people to dream big and then think of the first small step they can take to get them on their way.
You should always try to be prepared, be don't expect to feel perfectly prepared especially when taking on something you've never done before. Taking action when you don't feel completely ready is a commitment to your goals that is stronger that the possibility of failing or looking stupid, knowing that it is part of being human and we are all in the same boat! So yes, things might not work out exactly as you want them to but you will learn and grow so much in the process!
So whether it's hitting ‘publish’ on a less than perfect website, applying for that new job you don't feel 100% qualified for or pushing yourself to do a challenge you have previous been scared to do, why not commit to starting today?!
What is the first small step you can take to get you towards your big dreams?
Take it.
